Jamalaye Jibanta Manush is based on a novel of the same name by Dinabandhu Mitra, a Bengali writer and playwright who is best known for his social satire Nildarpan. The film adapts the novel's plot and characters with some changes and additions. For instance, the film introduces the character of Bichitragupta, a junior clerk in hell who helps Siddheshwar in his revolt. The film also adds some scenes of Siddheshwar and Vishnu visiting earth and witnessing the problems of human society.

The film was produced by Ananta Singh, a freedom fighter and revolutionary who was involved in the Chittagong armoury raid in 1930. Singh was also a film producer and distributor who founded Rajkumari Chitramandir, a production company that made several Bengali films in the 1950s and 1960s. Singh was impressed by Prafulla Chakraborty's directorial debut Chheley Kaar (1954) and offered him to direct Jamalaye Jibanta Manush. Chakraborty accepted the offer and made the film with a low budget and a tight schedule.

The film was a huge success at the box office and received critical acclaim for its comedy, direction, and acting. It is considered as one of the finest works of Bhanu Bandopadhyay, who played the role of Siddheshwar with his trademark humour and wit. The film also established him as a leading star of Bengali comedy cinema. The film also featured some of the most prominent actors of Bengali cinema, such as Chhabi Biswas, Pahari Sanyal, Kamal Mitra, Tulsi Chakraborty, and Jahor Roy, who played their roles with perfection. The film also won the Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film in Bengali at the 6th National Film Awards in 1959.

Jamalaye Jibanta Manush was remade in Telugu as Devanthakudu (1960) and in Tamil as Naan Kanda Sorgam (1960) by C. Pullayya. The remakes also starred Bhanu Bandopadhyay in the lead role and were successful in their respective languages. The film has also been dubbed in Hindi as Zinda Laash (1967) and has been shown on television channels. c481cea774
